Cruisers have always been a difficult type of ship to categorize. The term originated In the 18th century when a cruizer was any war ship on detached duty. In 1922 an international treaty defined two separate categories, a 10,00 ton heavy cruiser with 8 inch guns and a light cruiser that could only have guns up to 6 inch. The Germans departed from this with there panzerschiff concept.
