Submarines are the most formidable ships of the Royal Navy today. Traditionally, the world of submarines and submariners has been firmly closed to outsiders, partly because of the secret nature of submarine operations, but partly because such inscrutability serves to heighten the Submarine Service’s elite reputation. For the BBC TV series Submarine producer Jonathan Crane spent one year negotiating with the Royal Navy before gaining unprecedented access to this unknown world. With a small film crew he spent many weeks on different types of British submarines during a variety of genuine operations.
